Die-Casting Mold Bases: Plate Structure and Cooling

A die casting frame works in a harsher environment

A die-casting mold base for aluminium or zinc alloy does not work under the same conditions as an injection mold frame. Molten metal arrives hotter, faster and at higher pressure, and the tool sees a thermal shock on every cycle. Our die-casting mold bases are therefore built with thickened plates and reinforced rib structures rather than the plate sections that would be adequate for plastic injection work.

Thicker plate is not simply a safety margin. Under injection pressure the plates deflect, and deflection at the parting line shows up as flash on the casting - which then has to be trimmed, and on a sealing or visible surface that is a genuine quality cost. Ribbing adds stiffness where it is needed without the weight and material cost of a uniformly thicker plate, and both are decided from the projected area and the injection pressure you are running.

Thermal balance is a plate design problem

Die casting tools live or die on thermal balance. Heat has to be removed at roughly the rate it arrives, otherwise hot spots build up in the die, the casting sticks or solders, and cycle time drifts upward as the tool heats through a shift. That makes water circuit layout a plate-design question rather than a finishing detail: circuit position sets how evenly the tool is cooled, and it must be checked against ejector holes, insert pockets and pillar positions before the plates are cut.

Our deep-hole drilling covers Ø3 to 30 mm diameter at depths to 1200 mm, held to ±0.02 mm, which allows circuits to be routed around inserts instead of taking the shortest path between two points. Where the tool also uses heater cartridges, bore diameter and depth tolerance govern how well the cartridge contacts the surrounding steel and therefore how effectively heat transfers. Both are reviewed on the drawing before machining starts.

Material, machining and what to specify

Common materials for die-casting frames include 45#, 40Cr, P20, 718H, S136, NAK80 and S50C, supplied with material certificates and hardness checks recorded by batch. Because a die casting tool runs hot, the grade should be chosen with the operating temperature in mind rather than carried over from an injection tool that happened to use the same steel. We will recommend a grade at review if the drawing leaves it open.

Send the 2D drawing with hole coordinates and the 3D model, together with the alloy being cast, the projected area, the injection pressure and the plug standard - HASCO, DME, LKM or your own specification. Drawing review is free with feedback within 24 hours, and cooling layout, plate thickness and the inspection plan are best agreed together at that stage rather than amended after machining has begun.

FAQ

Why do die casting mold bases use thicker plates?

Injection pressure deflects the plates, and deflection at the parting line produces flash that then has to be trimmed off the casting. Thickened plates with reinforced ribbing give the rigidity needed without the weight and cost of a uniformly thicker frame.

How are cooling circuits laid out?

Circuit position is decided during drawing review and checked against ejector holes, insert pockets and pillar positions. We drill 3 to 30 mm diameter to 1200 mm depth at ±0.02 mm, which allows circuits to be routed around inserts rather than straight between two points.

Which steel is used for die casting frames?

Common grades are 45#, 40Cr, P20, 718H, S136, NAK80 and S50C, traceable by batch with material certificates and hardness records. The grade should be selected for the operating temperature rather than carried over from an injection tool.

What drawings do you need to quote?

A 2D drawing with hole coordinates and tolerances plus the 3D model, along with the cast alloy, projected area, injection pressure and preferred plug standard. We reply within 24 hours with feasibility feedback, a machining proposal and the delivery schedule.

All figures above refer to standard product data sheets; final confirmation is subject to written quotation.
