Mold Bases for Hot Runners: Cutouts, Channels and Coordination

The manifold zone is a design zone

A hot runner mold base replaces solid steel behind the cavity plate with a machined manifold zone: a cutout that carries the manifold, nozzles and insulation, sized from the hot runner supplier's general arrangement.

The cutout is not just a pocket. Its depth sets the plate stack, its edges carry the support rails that transfer clamp force, and its face flatness decides how evenly the manifold sits.

Wiring and thermocouple channels: plan them early

Every zone brings heater leads and thermocouples out through the mold - usually through machined channels in the backing plates and out through a connector box. Channels need radiused edges, sensible corners and enough cross-section that harnesses pass without forcing.

Retrofitting channels after plates are finished means opening up hardened or ground surfaces, so the harness routing should be agreed before the mold base is machined.

What the mold base supplier needs from you

Three documents prevent almost all hot runner base problems: the hot runner general arrangement with cutout and nozzle dimensions, the harness routing plan with connector box position, and the clamp force path confirmation that support rails and pad sizes are adequate.

With those, the base arrives with cutout, channels, connector box recess and rail seats finished - and the hot runner drops in on first assembly.

FAQ

Can a standard mold base be converted for hot runner use?

Sometimes, if the manifold cutout does not break into existing plate functions - but dedicated hot runner bases are cleaner: the stack is designed around the manifold from the start.

How is clamp force carried across the manifold cutout?

By machined support rails or pads around the cutout, sized so the plate does not deflect under clamp load. Their contact faces are finished flat, since they define the cavity plate's support.

Where should the connector box be placed?

Wherever the press wiring reaches it without crossing clamp slots or water lines - decided jointly by the mold designer and the hot runner supplier, then machined into the base.
