Flat Plates, Stable Molds: The Stress Story Behind Plate Flatness
Flatness is decided before the final cut
A mold base plate starts as rolled steel with locked-in rolling stresses, adds machining and heat-treatment stresses on the way, and only reaches true flatness when those stresses are relieved and balanced - not just machined over.
This is why a plate can measure flat on the machine and move days later: the material found its stress balance after the clamps came off.
The relief sequence that works
For larger plates, the practical sequence is: rough machine both faces with balanced stock removal, stress-relief heat treatment where the grade and size justify it, then finish machine and grind. Skipping the balance step on roughing is the most common cause of post-machining distortion.
Through-hardened and pre-hardened grades behave differently; P20-type pre-hardened plates usually need only balanced machining, while plates that see welding repairs or heavy localized cutting benefit from an added relief cycle.
What flatness figure to expect and check
A quality mold base plate should arrive with flatness consistent with its function: mounting and clamp plates in the range of a few hundredths of a millimetre, cavity and core plate seating faces tighter where the tool design requires it.
Verification is simple and worth doing on receipt: support the plate on three equal points (three points cannot rock), sweep with an indicator, and record the result in the mold file.
FAQ
Why did my plate bow after machining one face?
Unbalanced stock removal released the stress balance. Machine alternately face to face on large plates, and use stress relief where the size and grade call for it.
Does grinding guarantee flatness?
Grinding holds flatness at the time of grinding. If stresses remain in the plate, it can move afterward - which is why relief and balanced roughing come before final grinding.
How should plates be stored to stay flat?
Flat, supported at intervals, on edge in racks or fully supported on pallets - never leaning against a wall on one corner for months.
